Immunizations

The Health Information Management staff is responsible for ensuring that new students meet the state university immunization requirements. They also ensure that all international students are in compliance with federally mandated insurance requirements.

New Student Requirements

Each new student accepted for admission must submit, prior to registration, a completed Immunization form provided by UCF Health Services. The Immunization Policy and Form may be downloaded from the web at: www.hs.sdes.ucf.edu/healthcenter/forms/immunization.pdf. All students, regardless of age, must complete and return the Immunization Form to be reviewed for compliance. This includes documented proof of immunity to Measles (Rubeola) and German Measles (Rubella), and either proof of immunization against Meningitis and Hepatitis B, or a signed waiver declining these two vaccines.

You will be unable to register without completing these requirements. Submit your Immunization Form and documented proof to UCF Health Services prior to your orientation date so that you may register for classes during your orientation session. We recommend you start this process early; it can take you weeks to locate your immunization records.

Meningitis and Hepatitis B

Meningitis & Hepatitis B Information

UCF is required to inform you of two potential health risks: Meningitis and Hepatitis B.

Meningitis is an infection of the fluid of the spinal cord and brain, caused by a virus or bacteria and usually spread through exchange of respiratory and throat secretions (i.e. coughing, kissing). Bacterial meningitis can be quite severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, learning disability or even death. A vaccine is currently available for one of the most severe forms of bacterial meningitis, meningococcus. This vaccine effectively provides immunity for most forms of meningococcus; there is no vaccine for the less severe viral-type meningitis.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver caused primarily by contact with blood and other body fluids from infected persons. Hepatitis B vaccine can provide immunity against hepatitis B infection for persons at significant risk, including people who have received blood products containing the virus through transfusions, drug use, tattoos, or body piercing; people who have sex with multiple partners or with someone who is infected with virus; and health care workers and people exposed to biomedical waste.

On-Campus Housing Students

The immunization requirement applies to all returning students who will be residing on campus. HB 871/SB 1658 of the School Code Rewrite bill, SB 20-E, Section 339, Section 1006.69, Florida Statues states that an individual enrolled in a post secondary educational institution who will be residing in on-campus housing shall show proof of vaccination for meningococcal meningitis and hepatitis B, or sign a waiver form stating they decline the vaccines. This information is also contained on the Immunization Policy and Form.
